Advantage Creative

Posted on 05/10/18 Maker Bootcamp

Maker Bootcamp - our start up incubator for young creatives – ran from October 2018 to April 2019 at the Wavemaker maker-space in Stoke-on-Trent.

Maker Bootcamp was for young people (16-30) in the Stoke and Staffordshire area, to help give them the inspiration, practical help and support they need in getting into the creative industries.

We put a special focus on helping young people set up as a creative freelancer or start their own business.

All events were free to attend, as the cost of taking part was supported and funded by the Nat West Skills & Opportunities Fund.

How it worked

Each Thursday, we offered a packed programme of activities at the Wavemaker maker-space alongside monthly events giving participants the chance to network with others at the Stoke-on-Tech group over pizza and beer.

In the mornings, we held “Open” sessions in the Wavemaker maker-space, where participants learned how to use the maker equipment, develop maker skills, or hot-desk with other creatives.

In the afternoons, we staged workshops with industry experts on practical skills for creatives including: Maker Basics; 2D and 3D design workshops; online tools for productivity; web basics and many others.

We also delivered workshops in practical business skills including: Business Basics; Business Essentials; Confidence for public speaking and networking; and a wide range of others.

Jan Constantine was one one of the guest speakers in our series of Inspiring Talks

In the evenings, we staged Inspiring Talks from professional creatives who have been there, done that, and made the T Shirt. These included:

Once each month, participants were invited to Stoke-on-Tech Talks to help give them fresh insights into the latest digital tools and developments.

Alongside this programme, we provided one-to-one mentoring sessions on a flexible basis to fit in with participant's commitments and needs. These sessions were delivered by our own business experts to provide young creatives with dedicated help and support to get their new business up and running.
